I fell in love with The Thinker Builder’s “Not Your Ordinary Story Starters” when I was a fifth grade classroom teacher. I have long loved the idea of using photographs as story starters as they often stir the imagination.

Each of my students in grades K-5 has a binder with enrichment assignments to be used in their regular classrooms. The Story Starters are placed in the Writing tab and are used with grades 4, 5, and 6.

Each photograph includes three thoughtful story starters including different types of writing, and one set of open-ended questions for writers looking for more freedom. I select the photograph and copy the prompt choices in black and white for each student. Then I print a color copy of the writing paper that includes the photo. I love to see how the students approach the photo in different ways. Some students are very creative with first or third person narratives, while others prefer a persuasive essay prompt. In a few instances, I have compiled their writing into class books that are shared with teachers and parents.

You can try this awesome print and digital resource by downloading Story Starters FREEBIE Writing Prompts from The Thinker Builder on Teachers Pay Teachers. Unlike the monthly product which contains several photos, the freebie contains only one. However, you will be able to sample the excellent quality and better understand how you might use it in your classroom.
